there is a small test app in 
kdebase/workspace/libs/plasma/widgets/tests/testLayouts.cpp.

would you be interested in adding a horizontal layout to it? perhaps also a  
vertical layout with a horizontal layout. and some text labels with and 
without text to show the problem you are having?
