indeed; there's also a commented-out method in the Applet API maxSizeHint() 
which returns a QRectF. the idea is to have this provide the size of the area 
they are in, so the height or width of the panel could be advertised there, 
with updates resulting in calls to constraintsUpdated. whether or not this 
will be needed with the Layouts now remains to be seen. hopefully it won't, 
but we'll see.
