The only part where the actual implementation of the desktop comes handy 
(IMHO) is when dragging and dropping some files for a quick and non permanent 
layer of storage usage.
Think for example of dragging a file off from a webpage to the desktop -> 
attach it to a kmail message -> delete the file from the desktop.
But there I think that some kind of container plasmoid with a "clear" button 
and space where drag the files to should do it.
The desktop should probably be there for compatibility, with other wm and 
programmes, and for users very sticked to that desktop concept.
