right now i know of three general efforts going on:

 - the suse menu thing (code not released yet; will happen @ akademy)
 - kbfx for plasma (in trunk/playground/base/kbfx_plasma)
 - the baghira devels (not exactly sure what they're up to in particular?)

these three groups are starting to work together ... which is very good.

there's also some tangential efforts of relevance including:

 - strigi
 - solid
