Hi,

No, it doesn't use CURL at the moment. The package is downloaded  with
protocol wrapper for 'copy' function
Is bz2 PHP extension enabled?

Also I should warn you about this critical bug

You'll probably need to copy *config.php* from the backup created by
Updater manually as it is suggested by the reporter:
