This is actually a SabreDAV issue. When you upgrade the SabreDAV part of your
ownCloud 3 to version 1.5.9 even recurring events that started long ago should
sync fine. ownCloud 4 seems to use a more recent (and less buggy) SabreDAV
version than ownCloud 3
