[Owncloud] php debugging suggestions

Hi all,

Right now I am at the point where putting in simple echo or writing to log
files are not helping me a lot.
Can you'll please suggest a few php debugging tools you'll use ?

I would be accessing the syncML server from the command line ( or within an
application ) and not from the browser,
would xdebug still be able to help me here ?

any suggestion is greatly appreciated.
