What about having owncloud content run within an Iframe? Any "long-lasting" process could be thrown out of the iframe.
The right option would probably be fetching everything via Ajax(thus staying on the same page) - although it would require a redesign of owncloud navigation. However it would give many advantages and saved bandwitdh.
