Downstream question:
https://askubuntu.com/q/1569609/1004020 GTK Print Dialogs Not Appearing in
Kubuntu 26.04
I use KDE/Plasma 6 in Kubuntu, but I use Evince to print PDFs in order to
access the superior GTK print dialog (redacted example from an old machine
running Kubuntu 22.04). However, ever since upgrading from Kubuntu 25.10 to
Kubuntu 26.04, attempting to print from Evince gives me the (KDE default) Qt
print dialog, which does not have as many settings and features. I've also
tested other programs that I would expect to use the GTK print dialog, such as
GNOME Papers, and they're now using the Qt print dialog on my machine as well.
I have not been able to find any discussion of this online, much to my
surprise. How can I restore the use of the GTK print dialog in Evince?
Which "settings and features" are missing? Please open feature requests for
them at bugs.kde.org – Daniel T
@DanielT Mainly it seems to be missing a page centering option. Because of
this, I can't find a way in Okular to print a pdf that's the same size as my
paper (or close to it) without either scaling it down or having the edges get
cut off. Even if I select the "print original size" scaling mode, the corner of
the pdf page will be aligned to the corner of the printer margin rather than
the corner of the paper, so the printout will be shifted over and down by the
margin size, and the opposite two edges will be cut off. – psjf
Where is the "page centering option" in the GTK dialog? In the KDE one, we
have Name > Properties > Page > Margins – Daniel T
@DanielT In Okular's dialog, the margin options will not allow a setting
that would put any part of the pdf page outside the printer's printable area.
So on my printer, for example, I cannot set the margins to be less than .17
inches. Even if I could set the margins to 0 in Okular, that would only center
the pdf on the printed page if it's exactly the same size as my paper. If it's
slightly less I'd have to calculate the exact margin to center it manually, and
if the pages are slightly different sizes I'd have to print each one
separately. – psjf
In Evince, the "auto-rotate and center" setting is on the Page Handling tab
of the GTK print dialog. That tab is apparently not restored by my solution,
which I've only just noticed. However, Evince's default behavior with this
dialog seems to be to align the top left corner of the page with the corner of
the printed page rather than the printer margin, which is still something that
isn't currently possible in Okular. – psjf
The other problem I noticed with the default portal behavior is that
Evince's Qt print dialog is missing the "PDF options" tab that's present in
Okular, so there is no access to scaling options (or the other settings on that
tab) in that case. – psjf
How about Okular > Print > Print Options > Scale mode > Fit to printable
area? – Daniel T
Fitting the pdf page to the printable area is exactly what I'm trying to
avoid. I want the page to print at 100% scale. – psjf
