Can you run the command "echo hello | lp -d HPM880" on host A and attach the
corresponding CUPS error_log?

I can barely imagine it will make a change, but can you delete (or rename) both
files and see whether this changes anything?
Are any such files present on host B as well?

That's really interesting...
Is there anything of interest in /etc/cups/printers.conf or
/etc/cups/printers.conf.O on either host A or B?
