Yes; don't know.

I do use rewritable DVDs for nightly incremental backups.  Currently there is a
data DVD in there but it's stuck in a device-wait state - I will need to reboot
to clear it.

I'll let you know how it goes.  I think your "random guess" was well thought
out!
