I have a similar problem. I'm using fedora 20 and Okular hangs for +- 1 minute
when opening PDFs of books with a cover image, like the Debian Administrator's
Handbook¹. To make things worse, Okular hangs again every time I try to scroll
the book.
With Evince the same PDF books works flawlessly.
