I checked, and it turns out that I didn't have poppler-data installed. After
installing poppler-data, the Japanese text displayed perfectly (see
http://i.imgur.com/XJ77wGc.png for a before-and-after screenshot).

It appears that Arch does not have poppler-data listed as a dependency
(optional or otherwise—see
https://www.archlinux.org/packages/extra/i686/kdegraphics-okular/ ) for Okular,
so I suppose I should mention it over there.
