Initial progress report: so far, I've tested 1.7.1 (which I was using to begin
with) and 1.6.4 which are the only versions that are in Portage and it appears
to affect both.

I'll look at some older versions now, either by hacking ebuilds so they're
managed or installing/removing manually.
