Thank you what an amazingly fast response!  That does indeed sound _exactly_
like what i need. I don't appear to have that option - presumably because I am
using xfce, so may not have compiled (gentoo!) some other part of the KDE
desktop.

I will install some stuff and see if I can get it working.
