In my opinion it is the expectation of most people that something is placed
under the cursor when pressing the mouse button. Of course there is no proof
but for me it just makes more sense that way because the cursor is the only
feedback for the position you get. Just image something would be placed at the
bottom or with some distance from the cursor. It would be unexcpected.
