That was the culprit. I cannot believe I wasted time over this. Thanks for
letting me know.

I wonder where in the documentation did it say that it only works in the
browser mode? I have never seen it mentioned - maybe I missed it (I just
skimmed through the Okular handbook but could not find any), but I think the
documentation on Inverse Search should clearly state this to prevent further
waste of time of others.
