Same problem here.

This definitively possible. Evince does this, for example. The display is only
refreshed once the PDF file is complete.

...In my case, it's about preparing the final version with LaTeX, e.g., when
fiddling around with widows and orphans. It's very helpful then to see the old
and the new document right after another, so you can identify the changes.
That's not possible when the screen is left blank for a minute or so.
