Should have added: I suspect perhaps a problem with the video driver (only
because I never had this problem with a smaller machine and the same Fedora/Kde
combo, but with different video, and because someone else mentioned this (not
necessarily a good reason there)). 

I have an intel core i3 using the intel driver for the on-chip integrated
graphics.
