The current bar is completely useless for nearly all of my use cases
and wastes a lot of screen space.  Other people have different use
cases and might find the bar very useful.

Customization is imo the only solution to satisfy both aspects.

I use okular very often to read electronic schematics which are zoomed
very high. There, the important details might be exactly in the corner
where the widget was placed.

Removing the bar completely and adding a toolbar widget like this in
evince (http://ensc.de/evince.png) would be the perfect solution for
me.
