We don't have the November issue of ACM communications so we can't test.

I've tried with another pdf i have and it just open a konqueror.

Then i changed my default browser to firefox and it opened in firefox

So well, i can't reproduce any of your horrifying experiences, maybe the
problem is in the ACM file? Can you attach it?
