PDF support for Okular is provided by a plugin, and not linked directly from
the main application (which is almost a very thin wrapper that loads the KDE
KPart component).

In your Debian installation, you should have:
$ ldd /usr/lib/kde4/okularGenerator_poppler.so | grep poppler
        libpoppler-qt4.so.3 => /usr/lib/libpoppler-qt4.so.3
(0x00007f3e2d42e000)
        libpoppler.so.4 => /usr/lib/libpoppler.so.4 (0x00007f3e2a9cb000)
