I have been able to view Japanese documents for some time.  But my attempt to
view them today has failed - I just see gibberish.

It has been a couple of months or more since I last viewed one (successfully). 
I suspect that some online-update has broken things.  I do already have
poppler-data installed.

Another thing that was broken by a recent update is Yast2 package management
using the Yast2 GUI.  It works correctly with the curses interface from the
command line but fails with a QT error from the GUI.
