Well, the thing is that both Adobe Reader and Foxit Reader are able to detect
columns just fine (text selection, text highlight) so it's possible for sure.
Maybe Okular's PDF backend is limited and doesn't provide text-layout
information and that's what makes it hard. But saying that it's a hard problem
solvable to a computer is just not true.
