Well, that solution was done because people did not have (in KPDF) the page numbers and quick page navigation buttons when the side pane was hidden.

Hiding the bar? Sure, just to have bug reports asking for having the page number visible when its container is hidden? Better not.

Docking into the toolbar? I'm not a fan of putting into the toolbar what really is not a tool, but more an information widget.
