Hi guys,
here is the write-up of yesterday's meeting. If you miss something feel
free to add it as a reply to this mail.

necessitas meeting 2011-June 6

location:
#necessitas at irc.freenode.org

attendees:
BogDan Vatra - bog_dan_ro
Thomas Senyk - tsenyk
Ray Donnelly - mingwandroid
Robert Schuster - rschus
cartman

didn't make it:
Christian Kuester - cekay

The meeting informally began earlier than planned because of a bunch of
main contributors already being in the channel.

A main topic was the initial work on OpenGL ES support by Thomas.
Apparently before this can be merged a few problems have to be sorted
out. One of them is the support for Android versions before 2.3. Those
versions only have official Java/Dalvik support for OpenGL ES and a
wrapper is needed to make it available for native applications.

A question arised on how to access certain JNI objects (JavaVM, object
pointer, ...). There existed documentation about this but today it is
not up to date anymore and the request was made to fix this.

It was talked about Android 1.x support in Necessitas:
It is assumed that there are no armv7a variants for those versions and
that a market share of 4.5% does not warrant too much attention.

Only OpenGL ES version 1 is available which makes is
unsuitable/cumbersome to support in Necessitas. BogDan drew the line and
said that only software rendering will be available.

It was mentioned that QtMobility cannot fully ported to Android 1.x and
that a conversation should take place at the Qt summit.

It was even suggested to drop Android 1.x support altogether which
however BogDan was unsure about.

On the topic of new features for the alpha2 release the use of GDB 7.3
was mentioned.

Later on it was talked about the positive and negative aspects of the
OpenGL integration. While it is possible to do normal 2D widgets (either
drawn by a software renderer or an OpenGL one) next to custom GL calls
this will not perform very well or eats lots of CPU/GPU and as such
power. At least for Qt4.x this will not be easily solvable. Maybe on the
day before the Qt summit (June 15th) someone knowledgable can be reached
to find a solution. In general it is expected that Qt5 will solve this
problem once and for all. It has to be noted that those
performance/power issues also affect users on the MeeGo and Symbian
platform.

It was shortly talked about the number of people attending the June 15th
meeting. At least 7 people for Necessitas are expected and a wide range
of skills will be covered: Qt, OpenGL, porting, toolchains, Java,
Android APIs.

Regards,
Robert
