One possible approach could go like this:

Replace $[geDirections] with
<a href="routing://fromhere">Directions from here</a><br />
<a href="routing://tohere">Directions to here</a>

and intercept links clicked by the user similar to how https://git.reviewboard.kde.org/r/114419/ does. Then follow the approach of MarbleWidgetPopupMenu::directionsToHere() to react appropriately.
