I would suggest checking out the OpenAerialMap project. It is doing
for remote/aerial imagery what OSM is doing for vector data. Pulling
in free data (e.g. Landsat) and also has tools for users to contribute
their own as gathered through plane, kite, airship, etc. capture and
rectification tools.
A large amount of remote imagery data actually is available, or will
be soon, it just has had the same historic problem that road data has
- it's oddly located, in special formats, and not easy to consume.
