Agreed.
I was about to suggest Mercator as default, but I must say it is just to nice
to start with the globe, which you can spin around as you like. :-)
So maybe an "Auto" view mode could help here, which auto switches between
mercator and globe at specific zoom levels - and this could be set as default
then.
About the zoom levels I don't really understand.
