I noticed a related problem at the poles with the coordinate grid. When you
zoom in a lot, the drawing of the coordinate grid gets all messed up. The lines
sometimes veer off in the wrong direction and too many get bunched up together.
I attached some screen shots showing the problem.

Note I was using the "Plain" map but that in order to zoom in a lot, I had to
modify the file data/maps/earth/plain/plain.dgml and change the line with 

<maximum>  2100  </maximum>

to

<maximum>  4000  </maximum>

If you don't make this change, you won't notice this problem since by default
you can't zoom in that much. (We had to make this change since the users of the
application we are developing wanted to zoom in a lot)
