Kate slowing down...

sudo perf record --call-graph dwarf -p $(pidof kate)

type a bit in kate, Ctrl+C

and then open perf.data with Milian's cool Hotspot tool, click "Flame 
Graph" and you'll have your answer in a second. ;)
