Backticks not showing correctly

I'm trying to read/write programs with backticks and they don't show
properly.  The character next to the backtick is overwriting the backtick
(like if it was a diacritic).  The worst case being putting 2 (or more)
backticks consecutively, which ends up showing only one backtick (even
though they are all there and need one backspace each to delete them).

Am I missing a setting or is this a bug?
