I asked Gerd Knorr (xawtv) for a hint and he pointed me in the right 
direction. One needs to grab the XV port (XvGrabPort) before displaying an 
image (XvPutImage). It works without grabbing the port, too, but with all the 
weird effects we saw. So I am currently creating a new snapshot that contains 
a fix. I'd be glad if a few people could try it.
