No, I'm running Gentoo Linux and I don't have any problems with the build 
procedure (latest CVS checkout). My software versions differ to yours, 
though:

autoconf (GNU Autoconf) 2.59
automake (GNU automake) 1.7.9
GNU m4 1.4

Sorry, but I guess I can't help you with SuSE...
