I can't figure this out, but seriously Kstars has been around long enough that 
this can't be a simple typo.

I start Kstars, click on "pointing," and choose "North."  Up comes Perseus on 
the horizon, but on the horizon line it says "S."  Moving clockwise along the 
horizon I get these cardinal points:

    S
SE  |  NE
  \ | /
E-- o --E
  / | \
NE  |  SE
    S

(Or in 45% increments, S-NE-E-SE-S-NE-E-SE.)
What happened to North and East?  Doesn't look right, or are those letters 
referring to something else?
