I have noticed 2 bugs regarding trails (present in 4.1 and in trunk)
1) track an object, set to 1 hour/second, set 1 minute/object. See how the 
trail is now moving on its own, away from the tracked object
2) remove the ground, track an object, set a large speed, at least 1 
hour/second. You will see after some time that sometimes there is suddenly a 
segment of the trail connecting the tracked object and the limit of the 
horizon.
I have not dug much so far. If someone who knows well that part of the code 
could have a look at it, it would be great.
