Hi,
There is communication protocol for astronomical client program. It
allows interaction with other programs, for example other programs can
be opened from KStars with sky coordinates. Other features are data
exchange, image processing etc...

It is open source, language/platform independend. Is widelly supported
and defacto standart in Virtual Observatory.
