What is your version of automake?  I have 1.8, but 'make -f 
Makefile.cvs' seems to force it to use 1.6 instead for some reason.
I tried 'export WANT_AUTOMAKE=1.8', but the error message I get still 
indicates 1.6.

Can you try 'export WANT_AUTOMAKE=1.6; make -f Makefile.cvs', just to 
check if this iss indeed the problem?
