[Kstars-devel] KStars 3.2 on KDE 3.1.x

Hello,

With the release of KDE 3.2 approaching, we are again faced with the question:
should we support "older" versions of Qt/KDE (in this case, Qt/KDE 3.1.x)?

We have had a couple of people recently asking about compiling KDE from CVS
under KDE 3.1.x. It isn't trivial to do, because some parts of the code
assume that KDE/Qt 3.2 is required. However, I have a KDE 3.1.4 machine at
work, and I was able to compile KStars-CVS after some trivial changes:

+ change first line of configure.in.in to "#MIN_CONFIG(3.1)"
+ modify version strings of some UI files to "3.1.2".

That's it. After that, KStars compiles and runs fine under 3.1.x.

So, I'm thinking about releasing a tarball for which these changes have been
made to coincide with the KDE 3.2 release. This would let people who (for
whatever reason) are not upgrading to KDE 3.2 right away, to still have the
latest KStars.

Any thoughts or opinions? The support for 3.1.x will probably not extend
beyond the 3.2 branch, because one of the things I want to do is start using
some of the new features available in 3.2, such as the splashscreen, and the
new configuration classes.

regards,
Jason
