[Kst] formatting of numbers on axes

I am using kst2 2.0.7 and trying to make the numbers make
sense on the axes. Some of the values I have are 8 digits
wide and I'd like to force scientific notation on that with
fixed width fields. I found my way to the "Edit Plot Item"
panel which has a "Base /Offset Mode" subpanel. This has a
variable called "Digits before automatic base/offset mode"
which defaults to 9. Seems right since that's what I get.
But when I change this, nothing happens. I must be looking
at the wrong panel I guess.

I like my data to look like this (dummy data obviously):

-10.40
 -2.44
  1.23
  2.45
 12.40
 23.50

etc., and if there's a multiplier of, say, $10^3$, I like
that to be at the top of the axis.

Does anyone have a solution for this?
