I was disturbed by the difference between scalars and strings. 
After looking at the code quickly and thinking about it, I think scalars
don't actually make sense for ASCII. But if they do, it would be better
to have more symmetry between the implementations for strings and
scalars. In that case, I'd rather just cleanup scalars.

For ASCII all that I can imagine in terms of metadata is:
- datasource strings (the header lines minus units and minus field
names)
- vectors (with units as vector strings when we implement them)
- matrices (though I have never tried it and don't quite understand
if/how we can have more than one matrix at a time in the file). For
matrices I don't really see a possibility of metadata.
