No, they are not at all kst-specific. They allow configuring the system,
e.g. file associations (like the registry under Windows). It is a well
known freedesktop.org specification, see for instance
http://standards.freedesktop.org/desktop-entry-spec/latest/ and
http://standards.freedesktop.org/basedir-spec/basedir-spec-latest.html
for the directories they should go into (if I'm right). 

Concretely, that means that if we install in a non-standard location we
should output a message that the user has to update the corresponding
environment variables (like autoconf tools do).
