Hum, I'm not sure I like it. You're forcing data mode the whole time
when in zoom mode, right? That's a bit too much, I think many people
don't like having the data mode indicator around the whole time. It
really has to stay optional... 

However, you're right in saying that data mode does not work with layout
mode. But why not do it like that:
- when entering layout mode, deactivate the data mode action (memorize
the status it not done automatically)
- when leaving layout mode, reactivate the data mode action (restore the
status if not done automatically)

I think that'd be much better.
