I'd suggest adding the following line at the end of the plotitemdialog
constructor:

  setMinimumSize(800, 550);

It seems to work very well and is totally easy. Maybe we can improve it in the
future, but for the short term it sounds like a nice and easy compromise.
I'll let someone else commit it if you test it and like it.
