[Kst] kst and kde

Please forgive a naive question. I understand that KST is based on  
KDE and needs KDE support, but do I need to have a KDE desktop  
running in order for KST to run correctly?  Can I run it from a  
remote X-window display that doesn't have KDE installed? I get a lot  
of X-window-related errors message when I try this, but I don't know  
if that is inherent in KDE/KST or due to something wrong in my  
installation.
