Please, please consider the discussion in http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=109430 when working on this ! I'll be glad to answer if you have questions :-)
Basically, the idea is that it would be nice to have reserved/protected areas around the edges to put metadata (for instance) which are not affected when relayouting.
