Ok, this isn't a bug.  I was being silly.  

I was trying to put the units for something, so the text I was adding was in square brakets.  If you put text in square brakets, it assumes it's supposed to be a vector, so nothing appears.  Of course, I can escape things with backslash, so I was being dumb.  Sorry for the spam.
