esp since we would loose a lot of friends if we messed up and did this in the 
wrong directory (!).

The best solution, of course, is to attempt to convince the sysadmins to 
re-arrange extragear so that each project is fully sub-dired, including all 
the admin stuff, so we don't have to check out everything.
