This all sounds pretty cool :-) One of the main benefits of a new plugin
system as I see it is to allow plugins to provide their own dialogs with
much more flexibility. If that is really the intent, I'd like to see for
instance *one* fit plugin that offers a choice of options encompassing
all the current fit possibilities (and maybe even more). The same is
true for filter plugins, interpolation plugins, etc... We should not
just port all existing plugins to new style plugins without refactoring
them in the process ! 
Adam, I haven't had time to look at your work but is/will this grouping
be possible ?
