One obvious problem with this is that if you are trying to tag a particular event the text labels are tied to a particular position within a plot and not to a particular data value. So if you zoom/shift etc. the label is no longer correctly positioned.

One possibility would be add the ability to anchor the text labels to an x/y data value. Another would be to add text labels to data markers.
